She also serves as a Democratic National Committee Vice Chair, working to strengthen the Democratic Party nationwide. Adopted from Calcutta by a single mother and raised in rural Oregon, Shasti is the first South Asian woman to lead a state party organization anywhere in the country and the first AAPI Chair in the contiguous 48 states. In her first term, she led Washington Democrats to historic victories, including every statewide office, every Congressional incumbent seat, and increased legislative margins, making Washington the only state to move further blue in the 2024 elections. Before leading the Washington Democrats, Shasti founded and led a progressive political consultancy. Her work included launching a statewide PAC that successfully raised over $300,000 to support a historic number of Black women running for the Washington state legislature, with six out of eight candidates winning their races. She also established a donor-advised fund with the Seattle Foundation to support BIPOC women-led organizations and build a leadership pipeline. Her projects have been featured in publications like The 19th and the Associated Press. Shasti’s diverse professional background includes advisory roles with organizations like Ichor Strategies and Girl Scouts of the USA, and strategic planning for the University of Memphis. She has also worked with three Nobel Peace Prize winners—Malala Yousafzai, President Barack Obama, and Kailash Satyarthi—to advocate for radical change. Previously, she served as Chair of the King County Democrats from 2018–2022, worked on four presidential campaigns, and served in the Obama White House's Office of Public Engagement. She is a sought-after speaker and commentator on topics including women of color in politics, immigrant and AAPI experiences, progressivism, social justice, diversity and inclusion in U.S. democracy, and young changemakers (Millennials & Gen Z). Shasti has been a featured speaker at Dartmouth College, Seattle University, and on USA Today, Vanity Fair, King 5 Seattle, Seattle Times, and more.
